Nathan did it again.

Nathan flipped over from his tummy to his back today. Now he can roll and roll and roll. This is the reason I am blogging today.

But so much has happened since I last posted comments. The kids had fun on Halloween. Ellie won third place for making a pumpkin out of construction paper. She said the friend that placed first had help from an adult. For half a day she kept complaining that she only placed third because I didn't help her. I kept trying to explain that third place was something to be very proud of, especially since she did it herself. I don't know if she got it. Luckily, first place and third place received the same prize: a bag of candy. Of course Ellie wanted to be a princess. Aiden was only interested in the candy. Aiden also handed candy out to trick or treaters at our house. He did a really good job. A 7 year old boy came dressed as the incredible hulk and had a green mask as well. Aiden was so scared he drew back. The boy lifted his mask and Aiden laughed and gave him a piece of candy. It was so cute. Aiden kept saying "there you go" as he handed out the candy and then said "Happy Halloween" as they were leaving.
Last weekend Ellie and Aiden went to a wedding with their grandparents. Ellie had a lot of fun with her aunt there. Aiden was a handful. Once they got back, his grandparents vowed never to take him anywhere. :)
Aiden also seems to be taking after his sister. He likes coloring and drawing. He also really likes to be read to. It is a fun age. He is also really responding well to discipline. I found it really hard to discipline him because he cried alot and his grandparents were softies. We really cracked down on Aiden while his grandparents were away and have tried to continue being consistent with discipline since they have been back.

Meltdowns and New Routines

With the start of flu season, the children and I were sick for a while and I was feeling pretty overwhelmed. What started out as a way to give mom a break became a new routine. My husband now gets the children ready for bed and makes sure they sleep. Aiden was absolutely opposed to this plan. But when he realized that we were not going to be moved by his screaming and crying, he gave in. The children are sleeping now: that is why I am able to post to this blog today. Starting tomorrow I will post pictures....probably.
Ellie loves preschool. The thing I find interesting is that when I ask her what she did in school, she will say, "I don't remember", but then later on that day or on another day she will randomly recall an event that went on that day. Tonight, out of the blue, she said, "Mom, when I was sitting on the sand today, I prayed." I asked her why she did this. She said she didn't have anything to do while she was sitting on the sand (in the playground) and just prayed for her friends to play well together. Huh. That was interesting.
Aiden is always saying "nabbunnohm". This is not a nice word and I do not know how to get him to stop. He also doesn't like to speak in Korean anymore. When I ask him to, he asks me to take a "time-out". (in English, of course). This is somewhat upsetting because I really thought it was cute when he spoke in Korean. I think his grandparents might be a little sad too.
Nathan is losing some of his baby fat. I wish I had more time to play with him. It seems like I just transport him from place to place as I supervise the other children and do other household chores.
I'm starting to feel a little hungry so I will be ending the post now.

Nathan did it!!

Nathan rolled over by himself for the first time on Monday, October 6, 2008. He is about 4 and a half months old. This is quite an accomplishment in our family because my other two children rolled over when they were about 6 months. Yay Nathan! This may be an indication of events to come ;) He He. So I will post a couple of pictures of him that we took at Anna's house. She bought him the cute outfit that he is wearing. The little boy in the picture is Michael, Anna's son. Actually, he is not so little. He is quite tall for his age and the envy of many mothers :)

Family Trip

This past weekend we took a family trip to Las Vegas to visit some friends of ours. It was definitely hard with three kids but the kids had fun.

We stopped at a place called Wickieup (rattlesnake capital). There was a wood carving of a Native American man and it scared the living daylights out of Aiden. We finally convinced him that he was not real. Aiden even posed for a picture with the wood carving.

Ellie and Aiden loved the ferris wheel at Circus Circus. That was their favorite. They also liked the swimming pool.

Still No Camera...

Sorry I have to post text only. I haven't met up with the friend that has my camera yet.
I just finished a book my sister sent me - "Norwegian Wood". I am so surprised at how much I root for the protagonist. I want him to do the right thing; and become so disappointed when he doesn't and justified somehow when he does. I also want life to somehow work out for him. I think I also feel this way about the people in my life who are closest to me. If I were to feel this way about large numbers of people I think I would become emotionally bankrupt. Books and stories are interesting in that they allow you to become temporarily, but completely involved - with the option of withdrawing when convenient or on a whim. I take comfort in the fact that the characters are not real people. This may partially explain my affinity for fiction. I rarely read nonfiction for pleasure.
I want to pause and say a quick prayer for the meaningful protagonists in my life. I love you.

Marathons

Something happened today that made me think that life is a series of marathons. There seem to be very few one shot things. I was doing the dishes today after breakfast and thought, ' now I'm done.' In actuality I would have to do the dishes again after lunch, then after dinner, then the next day and the day after. In the recent past, my husband has been working out a lot...to the point where he developed some definition in his abs that he was very proud of :) Recently though, he has neglected to do his workouts because of work and family. All too quickly the definition in his abs vanished. In some ways it seems unfair. Now his abs look like any other person who hasn't worked out....even though he devoted months to obtain those (now absent) firm abs. Funny thing. I've also had other things in my life where I think 'okay, that's done' but it's only done if I continue to put effort into keeping it from coming back.
This complicates my life because it means that I have to think about a lot of things all the time. Well, I guess that's the reason we humans have relatively large brains. Sorry I don't have any pictures to post today. I went to a birthday party last Saturday and left my camera there. I should have it back by this weekend. :)

In honor of the Olympics...

Here is Ellie wearing this outfit in honor of the Beijing Olympics. :)

Actually, she just happened to pick it out that day to wear to school.

She is really enjoying school now. She tells me that nobody (I guess that includes her) cries at school anymore. The children must all have settled into the routine of school. The two chairs that she is standing on were completely re-upholstered by my mother in law. We were all very impressed. She does a lot of projects, but in my humble opinion, this was her best project so far. I have also included some video clips of Ellie singing some songs she learned at preschool.

Finding Joy

Last Sunday our pastor talked about finding joy. I have been thinking about the last time I let loose with unrestrained joy. Even as a child, I was pretty serious. What I can say for sure, though is that joy for me would not be possible without my friends. They allow me to be ridiculously dorky. I am more afraid of my family judging me than my friends.
Probably some of my most joyous occasions were the births of my children. I felt like "wow, I can't believe this is happening to me."
My task this week is to do something truly joyous. This is a most difficult task. I'm very happy, but joy seems to be something different. It seems like something unplanned for; a gift, perhaps. I think the only thing I can do is to try to set up the conditions where it is possible for joy to happen. If something should happen this week or sometime in the near future, I will post it.

Consumed by the Olympics

I haven't been writing for a while because I have been watching the Olympics. What I really love is seeing the expressions on the athletes faces when they finish a gold medal performance. I feel so emotional. I can't even begin to imagine how hard they worked to get there. I am so impressed that their lives have been dedicated to excellence when most people struggle even to accomplish mediocrity. I am inspired by their dedication.

Aiden and Play-doh

By the way, Aiden insists on wearing that shirt. He'll scream if I try to take it off and put it in the washer. Sometimes I do get it off him. Then he'll want to wear the shirt right out of the washing machine. The wetness doesn't seem to bother him. He also says he is "Lightning Mcqueen" and runs around saying "Kerchow".

Nathan's First Haircut (actually, I just trimmed the edges)

I took a few pictures of Nathan after I trimmed around his ears with scissors. He has lots of hair!

Ellie's Second Day of School

Today was Ellie's second day of preschool. The transition today was harder. As I was leaving, Ellie started to cry. In the classroom there is a little red sofa. When kids cry, the teacher has the child sit on the sofa until he is ready to join the class without crying. Apparently Ellie and another boy was sitting on the sofa and another child had to sit on the floor because there was no more room. Soon, however, the children were off the sofa and singing songs and doing crafts. Ellie made a beautful necklace.

Update on Aiden

Aiden was a little sick recently. He hasn't been sleeping well and I think his immune system was down. Last weekend he went to a birthday party (where he played mostly by himself until dad took him home) and played with his favorite tent.

His language skills are always improving and he loves to listen to and tell stories. Currently he loves Pinnochio and The Three Little Pigs.

Ellie's First Day of Preschool

I was afraid I would cry or Ellie would cry. We walked into her classroom and she found her nametag and sat in the circle at the front of her classroom. She was tracing the letters on her nametag and from time to time she would look up to assure me that she was a big girl and that she was not crying. After a few minutes I told her that I was leaving. She asked me to stay. I told her she needed to listen to what the teacher was saying. When she turned to face the teacher, I left. I worried about her but when I went to pick her up after school she told me she didn't cry at all. Yay! When I asked her if some kids did cry, she said yes. She thinks that maybe next time she can give them a high five or a hug to make them feel better.
Here is Ellie after class excited about completing her first day.

New Blogger

I will admit that I am an inexperienced blogger, but circumstances have forced me to take up this task. So, I will pick up where my husband left off. Our baby Nathan is already two months old and about 15 pounds. The pictures posted below were taken at Asher's birthday party. (7/26/08) He just turned one. Ellie and Aiden are trying their best to get along. They have acknowledged that they are "best friends" but I don't think their definition of friends includes sharing food or toys.

O.P insists that Nathan looks like my mom. He calls Nathan "jangmonim"
I'm not going to say Asher is a bully, but pictures don't lie :)
I think Aiden has grown up a lot recently. I hardly recognize him.
In this picture, I am in my usual state of tiredness. Nathan wakes up 3 to 4 times a night. He also has GERD so I have to keep him upright for a while before putting him back down into his crib (which is elevated on one side)

Lena Dropped by today!

Nathan said hello to his cousin today. It was a pleasant surprise....

She is 2 months older.

Meet the fourth addition to our family... a new grill.... :)

So this is how it all went. Youngun is a hardcore grill master. He gets me all excited about grilling. So I bought a small transportable grill from home depot for $20. Then I found that it's too flimsy and I tossed it. Then I went to Walmart and bought another $20 grill...a little more sturdy. It's nice.... It has a nice air vent on the bottom and the top... Sturdy... Simple... I was good to go and I digged through my freezer and took out some freezer burned pork and grilled it up! It was absoltely nasty! It was probably in the freezer for years... Still I was having fun on my new grill... Here is the picture of my new small grill.

Afterwards, I went upstairs and watched Good Eats about Grilling. The smart cook guy goes on to describe his "perfect grill". A Nice wide grill pad (mine was slim chrome), A thermometer on the hood (mine didn't have it), Air vent (mine had it. YES!), Ability to lower and raise the coals (mine didn't have it)... 1 out of 4... That was just sad... But then, I am not a professional like Youngun, so I was still satisfied.

Later that night, I went to pick up my father from the airport and we dropped by Fry's to pick up some steak and lo and behold, there were grills on display. I looked around and I found this beauty...it had all four qualifications mentioned above and I had to get it! The grill itself cost $88...and I paid another $45 for the smoker addition.... but it is a thing of beauty... I grilled my steak in the bad boy and it tasted goooood..... Too bad Nathan can't enjoy a steak yet.... Ellie had some... I included the picture of our fourth addition to our family...

The little round dial on the top is the thermometer on the hood...

The little handles on the sides raises and lowers the charcoals....
The grills are nice and wide with lots of surface area...
The smoker on the side can be used to heat the meat indirectly or smoke the meat.
The airvent on the side can be used to let the air in and carry the heat to the meat...

See? Four out of four.... I don't really like to throw parties...but now that I have the grill... I think I have to... :)

Four Days Old...

Four days old...eating, pooping, sleeping, crying...and keeping the parents awake... but overall, a well mannered baby.
The baby has lots of hair on his arms....definitely a Choi...
